What to do with the Military Bases and the Right of Collective Self-Defense – the choice of Okinawa –

A symposium to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of the New Diplomacy Initiative (ND) and its first publication titled “Kyozo no Yokushiryoku,” (“The Pretense of Deterrence”), edited by ND and published by Junposha, was held at the Niraikanai hall of the Okinawa Kariyushi Urban Resort Naha in Naha City. The title of the symposium was “What to do with the Military Bases and the Right of Collective Self-Defense – the Choice of Okinawa.” Approximately 800 people participated in the symposium.

Nago Mayor Susumu Inamine visited New York and Washington D.C. between May 15th and 24th in 2014, and appealed for the broader objection of  the planned relocation of Futemma Air Station .New Diplomacy Initiative (ND), helped coordinate the mission and attended the tour. I would like to post three of my reports issued in the Okinawa Times between June 5th and 7thin 2014.

New Diplomacy Initiative Symposium

After giving his keynote speech, Torigoe Shuntaro, board member of ND, was joined by Nagamoto Tomohiro, chief editorial writer at the Okinawa Times, and Taira Choukei, Kariyushi Group CEO, to discuss various topics including the significance of the U.S. military base problems in Okinawa, awareness and understanding of these problems in Japan as a whole, and the gap in awareness between between people in Okinawa and Japan.

Reconsidering Futenma Base Closure and Henoko Base Construction

New Diplomacy Initiative Symposium

On January 10, 2014 the New Diplomacy Initiative (ND) held a symposium in Nago City titled “Rethinking the Return and Relocation of Futenma.” Beginning with a keynote address by Mr. Kyoji Yanagisawa, a ND board member, and a video message from Mr. Mike Mochizuki, also a ND board member, the symposium included a panel discussion with Mr. Susumu Inamine (Nago City mayor), Mr. Toshinobu Nakazato (former chairperson of the Okinawa prefectural assembly and former advisor to the Liberal Democratic Party Okinawa Prefecture headquarters), and Mr. Hiromori Maedomari (professor at Okinawa International University and former Ryukyu Shimpo chief editorial writer).
